"Slip into the feeling blow a hole right through my soul / Faded rat hood jeans familiar comfy in my home / Ride into tomorrow cause it’s all a great unknown / I wanna be another rolling stone I wanna be another rolling stone..."
The brazenly beautiful psych rock and roll audacity of "Another Rolling Stone", by Central Florida bred / Nashville based Laney Jones and The Spirits, is the kind of sound that raises glasses and brings people together. The heady mix of slacker, psych rock, busker punk, blues / garage rock goes down easy because Laney and her hard rock compadres are all in. The swank, the swagger, is as spicy as Laney's yelpy drawl. The full throttle musicality feels spring loaded and listening to "Another Rolling Stone"'s kind of hybridic 'little bit of this and little bit of that' sensibility had me thinking of a wide disparity of sounds from many artists as diverse as Sheryl Crow, Diarrhea Planet, OSEES, Valley Queen, Pissed Jeans, Amyl and The Sniffers AND Lucinda Williams herself, or maybe an amalgam of all of them or similarly such artistic temperaments.
Anyway you cut it, "Another Rolling Stone" is a killer instant classic and it is so absolutely appropriate that Rolling Stone itself featured it in their July 11th "Songs You Need to Know this Week".
Some words from Laney:
"I subscribe to the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi. The art of breaking and being glued back together again with gold. As a songwriter and as a person, that’s what I’m interested in, a broken beautiful life. I’ve been riding the flow state wave of songwriting for just over a decade now, studying everything from clawhammer banjo in my native state of Florida with Steve Martin Banjo Award Winner Mark Johnson to hit-songwriting with Kara DioGuardi at Berklee College of Music in Boston. I currently reside in Nashville, TN. When I'm not making noise in the studio with my drummer/partner Brian and my dog Hap, I’m out on the road. Breathing in and out, trying to keep shining this little light of mine. Shine on y'all."
I love, LOVE, LOVE the Official Video featuring Laney unleashing herself on unsuspecting passersby in Nashville. Turn it up and go ahead and sing along:
"Slip into the feeling blow a hole right through my soul
Faded rat hood jeans familiar comfy in my home
Ride into tomorrow cause it’s all a great unknown
I wanna be another rolling stone I wanna be another rolling stone
Oh some say jazz is dead but man it’s bubbling alive
I see it in the backroom where the killer players hide
It could be bright shiny if there wasn’t so much pride
I wanna be another rolling stone
I wanna be another rolling stone
So give me sonic comfort and dance me dirty\clean
Chasing down the memory like a familiar city street
Shaky in the morning it’s a terminal disease
I wanna be another rolling stone
I wanna be another rolling stone
I wanna be another rolling stone"
