"i'm taking careful notes / a detective for your love / connecting all the dots / i do it all the time..."
The dissonant full blown love and heartbreak of "Detective", by Northern California alt rock trio Slugfeast, is wonderfully heavily twisted and wonderfully sadly pretty too. Percolating on choppy sort of doo wop punk guitar with post grunge half step shifts, unabashedly melancholy in a romantic spirally way I am loving bassist Claire Tauber's vocal countenance, fully vulnerable with emotional bruises showing. She expresses the torn and worn parts with levels of aloofness too as a survivor would. Alejandro Magallan's guitar is awash in fuzz and when he hits some of those implosive dissonant chords (alternate tuning maybe?) it sounds so artful and killer as Lucas Wieser plays the drums in a way that highlights the sadness and turmoil of "Detective" riding the open high hat and cymbal edges creating splashy ambience. Love the way the musical breaks feel so wonderfully, askewly emotional to match the discordance in our brains when we spiral in the only way a love interest can make you spiral like.
LOVE this track. : "Detective" was produced, recorded, and mixed by Brad Lincoln at Deathbed Studios and Mastered by Nicholas Wilbur of Anacortes Studios

"i find another scrap
a note under my bedi read it all day long
to remember what it said
and i know
not a lot can change
baby, i know
everything is different
baby, i know
pick a different
baby, i know
pick a different angle
baby, i know
this could be the answer"

Slugfeast’s self-titled debut is the culmination of three years of performance, songwriting, and life lived shared between its three members. Their songs reflect the trio’s collective experiences navigating adulthood in an eroding empire, exploring themes of grief, growth, and reconciliation through layers of wooly distorted guitar, driving bass, and dynamic drumming. Gleefully kinetic and emotionally raw, Slugfeast aims directly for the chest with each fuzzed-out track. Recorded and mixed by Brad Lincoln at Deathbed Recording in Oakland, CA, Slugfeast synthesizes the eclectic influences of its creators, pulling sonic signatures from the worlds of slowcore, shoegaze, folk rock, spiritual jazz, and post-hardcore to create a sludgy draught of hope and regret. From the purple bruising of a battered soul to the tentative suspension of old fears, this full-length debut explores the tenderness inherent in living through love and loss. For fans of Yo La Tengo, Dinosaur Jr., and Ovlov, and especially for those who value long drives to distant vistas, the friendship of local fauna, and learning from your mistakes.
