"others are just passing through / others stay right beside you / so long as nothing you can do..."
The ebullient pop-rock psychedelic sunshine of "Others", by Detroit, Michigan's Matthew Smith Group , feels like vintage found footage from a Cathode Ray TV, the musical act on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. I mean there is something so special happening here, a paisley purity, a kind of lovely crush of 60's baroque / broad pop and 80's - 90's indie rock / twee / post punk complete with jangly guitars, propulsive orchestrations of tom tom beats, active happy bass, cool horns and vocal harmonies. Think of an amalgam of The Turtles, The Beach Boys, The Cure, Guided by Voices, Cocteau Twins (or thereabouts) sort of filtered through a version of a Phil Spector-esque wall of sound.
I love the sound that has been crafted here. Call backs to times before while feeling a bit off kilter too in an art punk sort of way but most of all, the all encompassing pop rock embrace feels so evocatively gorgeous.
