"Struck a match, in my pocket / Lights pants, strike and toss it / I can’t, seem to stop it / Caught, fire, out of options..."
The persistent pounding runaway beat and dark sonic dreamscapes of "In Your Pocket" by Packaging, the acerbic duo of Daniel Lyon (Spirit Award) and Daniel “Connor” Birch (Flaural), runs frantically, maybe even desperately, looking inward with claustrophobia like one of those tense dreams where you wake up tired. The sense might feel more like performance art than a song, one that feels destined to be accompanied by multi-media or float across the frames of a film. Oddly enough, "In Your Pocket" feels, in some ways, sonically adjacent to a song called "And Counting" which appeared on my 2017 music project Donker (Age of Dinosaurs album), hence a memoric feeling but the deja vu doesn't last very long. Lyon's and Birch's artful creation is, of course, much grander, more magnetic, and the tropicalia of ruminations strike more emotional chords, spiraling into existential places beyond mere paranoia of a song written by a hack like myself.
"In Your Pocket" is so darkly dreamy and artfully sticky that I will certainly be checking out the duo's self titled debut album "Packaging". Yeah, for sure.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Their debut album, Packaging, is a suite of emotionally resonant songs about disconnection, ennui, and restless movement. Featuring several musical contributors, including Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic), Ash Reiter (Sugar Candy Mountain), James Barone (Beach House), and Andy Rauworth (Gauntlet Hair). The album, like actual packaging, is a tactile experience. From the pulse-pounding rush of “Running Through The Airport” and “In My Pocket” to the woozy melancholia of “Didn’t Wanna Stay” and the quietly devastating “On Holiday,” Lyon and Birch combine their talents in ways that push each other to new emotive heights.]
LYRICS
Struck a match, in my pocket
Lights pants, strike and toss it
I can’t, seem to stop it
Caught, fire, out of options
No no no no no no no
Pack of smokes, in my pocket
Part of, my new process
No no no no no no no
House filled with rain, floating away
Memories fade, faces remain
But I still got it, in my pocket
Don’t look twice, ceiling’s falling
two hands, Interlocking
House filled with rain, floating away
Memories fade, faces remain
But I still got it in my pocket
-Robb Donker Curtius
Lights pants, strike and toss it
I can’t, seem to stop it
Caught, fire, out of options
No no no no no no no
Pack of smokes, in my pocket
Part of, my new process
No no no no no no no
House filled with rain, floating away
Memories fade, faces remain
But I still got it, in my pocket
Don’t look twice, ceiling’s falling
two hands, Interlocking
House filled with rain, floating away
Memories fade, faces remain
But I still got it in my pocket

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM

The name Packaging may connote a cynical mindset about the music industry, but the music that duo Daniel Lyon (Spirit Award) and Daniel “Connor” Birch (Flaural) make is far from cynical. Instead, it’s a passionate merging of elements from their distinct voices: krautrock chug, psychedelic swirl, electronic grandeur, and tuneful accessibility, with a pinch of bristling self-awareness sprinkled on top.
