"Dropped your box off yesterday / Now everything is just the way / It used to be / Used to be for you and me..."
The sleepy ghost eulogy of "T.V. Dinner" by Albuquerque, New Mexico's sometimes lo-fi indie rock trio Homebody, and from their debut concept album "The Drop", is a song that pokes at you, like a finger tapping on your shoulder from behind you but you turn and he or she is not there but kind of always is. I am loving the constructions, the pearly somber lullaby guitar notes, the simple beat, the winding bass line that seems to be wondering about deep things and a vocal countenance, self deprecatingly sad. The sense of a hard reflection of a relationship that ended is, painfully brought to bear in such a way that not only feels relatable but even heartbreaking from a distance. Lines like:
Lines like:
That last time I looked in your eyes
I saw our future daughter fade
And slowly die
Another dream that slowly died
I saw our future daughter fade
And slowly die
Another dream that slowly died
or
And I know you’re alive and still you haunt me
In jokes and talks your voice comes right out through me
In jokes and talks your voice comes right out through me
...cut through the most dense armor and punches you right in the gut.
The storytelling structure throws out the normalcy of songwriting, verses moving in linear fashion and no chorus to speak of because by definition a chorus has to be repeated (at least once) but the song does eventually transition to something like a chorus and it is a truly beautiful moment. I love the emotionality of the melody and the apology that feels like a long heavy relief. I have been thinking that if this release at the end isn't a chorus it kind of feels like a bridge but a bridge to nowhere??? I don't think so. So maybe just a beautiful outro or maybe a requiem.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
["The Drop" is a concept album that tells the story of two disillusioned lovers trying to navigate a new relationship in a world that's tilting on societal collapse. Each song builds a part of the narrative as the characters experience falling in love in a time of existential despair and the reckoning that follows. Musically, the backdrop for each song is different touching on indie rock, psychedelia, and bedroom pop, with splashes of soul, math rock, and songwriter woven together. Homebody's usual lofi style of recording is now intertwined with more hifi studio takes, creating a collage of different aesthetics including string and flute arrangements.]

Homebody emerged from reconnecting a friendship through music during the global shutdown. Each living in different cities, Wyatt, Kendall and Marshall sent recordings over dropbox and, in 2022, released an EP which caught the ear of indie playlists BIRP.fm and Obscure Sound. Since then, Homebody has toured the Southwest, including opening for Brainstory in 2024, establishing a growing community of listeners with their lofi indie sound. After 3 years of recording across the country in various studios, bedrooms, and basements and a wildly successful kickstarter, Homebody's debut album “The Drop” is ready.
