"Steal my eyes / And run the numbers / Rob me blind / While I slumber / But I got a place for you / Just like I always do / As long as you just gimme those, gimme those, gimme those shiny things..."
The late 70's proto punk / glam dusted bite of "Shiny Things" by Greenpoint Brooklyn indie rock trio Marvelle Oaks, and from their new full length "Fuzzzo", has me gleefully smiling. While previous tracks by these guys have (to me) leaned 80's / 90's varying degrees of new wave / post punk / art rock, I am feeling a wonderful connection to 70's iconic sounds via David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed sans heroin withdrawals. The Nerves circa 70's who are also a three piece power pop band like MO come to mind too.
Key to "Shiny Things" suggestive sort of drunken stumble (like all number of QOTSA tracks) is guitarist / vocalist Alex Demir's dirty angular guitar strikes against Tom Marsh's snappy powerful drumming and when Tess Demir's truly standout bass work with the cool walking lines for added punctuation as a the raw sultry framework for Alex's artfully fried vocals, it all feels like desert when you are craving a sugar high. ALSO kudos to the that "oh yeaaaahs" and cool lead guitar noodling.
Thoroughly enjoying this--
ADDED thoughts:
Though different, some adjacent side tastes to "Shiny Things" might be of Montreal circa 2004's "Satanic Panic in the Attic album", Bruce Woolley & The Camera Club circa 1979's "English Garden", Shoes 1979 album "Present Tense".
Stay curious.

Marvelle Oaks is an indie rock trio from Brooklyn, NY. Founded in 2021 by Alex Demir, MO's guitarist and singer. Alex is joined by wife Tess Demir on Bass and Tom Marsh on Drums. MO's known to get people moving with a mix of influences that include VU, rock phase Eno, Pavement, The B-52s.
Their latest release, Fuzzzo, is the band's first LP with this current lineup with Tom Marsh on drums. "I've always loved trios, there's just a ton of space in the sound either to fill or leave open. When Tess and I started working with Tom we really started to grow up as band." Fuzzzo is the fruit of that relationship.
