"pulled out of the ditches / walking with the living / never really was your style / fall into another / fire left to smother / I could see the smoke for miles..."
The vibrant cross generational indie rock dance and high fives of "Moon on the Rise" by New Jersey rockers Ruby Bones, offer a joyous blend of genres that feels like the best bits of a lot of things. Within the tightly wound musicality I feel an amalgam of populous pop rock leans of Gerry Rafferty or The Empty Pockets but also the indie rock / prog punk wonkiness of Richard Hell & The Voidoids (just listen to Time) and even Television all smashed together in a sophisti pop meets underground rock way and I like that, I like that a lot.
I think what makes this track so special is the swing in the cadence the big rock swings and breakdowns, the intimacy one moment and the vast rock atmospheres the next and the Chris Foxe's vocal countenance and stirring vocal melodies. Everyone here is top shelf, guitarist Matt Cohen furious fanning, drummer James Janocha's tight chops (the drumming during the final chorus build up kills me everytime), Danny Rasczyk's sax work and break that had me thinking of David Bowie on Iggy Pop's Lust For Life LP (which was afterall Iggy's only self proclaimed 'pop' album) and CJ Anderson's bass shapes that hold this all together so beautifully.
