"I’m not yet who I wanna be, I have to hide / Body aches forms the signs I know, you’re mine..."
The potent post punk mood and artful feral eruptions of "Through the Light" by Manchester, England's Rude Films and the first follow up to their 2025 well acclaimed eponymous debut full length, is from the get go, top to bottom, inside and out, a full out engagement, filmic in it's sonic and emotional richness. It is rare that I receive such a killer song that also is perfectly engineered, produced and a balance of all things artful. I am loving James Platt's fully forward facing textured bass sound, Liam Miro's / Hill-Southern's guitar shapes that sonically moves between indie guitar picking melodic lines and thwacking grungy angular power chords, Rick Ryding's truly expressive punchy shuffling drumming and guitarist Aaron Hill-Southern's vocal countenance, that moves from introspective ruminations and guttural howls.
I am kind of backing into Rude Films as I somehow missed their debut album's release (my bad) and look forward to discovering them all over as this track is bloody well perfect and so cinematic in nature, maybe an amalgam of New Order, The Murder Capital, Idles, The Cure (or thereabouts).
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
['Through the Light' was recorded in May 2025 at 80Hz Studios, Manchester and produced by Greg Veryard. It's a brooding track about being uncomfortable in your own skin and searching for an escape.]
[Straddling the boundary between discordance and serenity, Rude Films contrast light and dark to craft alt rock that is foreboding yet hopeful. Since 2018, they’ve occupied the dank mills of Manchester, heavily inspired by their precursors but determined to carve out their own sound.]

March 2025 saw the release of their eponymous debut album, preceded by the singles ‘Mort Subite’ and ‘Blood on the Tracks’. This follows the highs of 2024, with numerous shows supporting Manchester post-punk favorites, IST IST, including at the 1300 cap New Century Hall. They were recently included in a list of ‘ones to watch 2025’ by BBC Introducing and their album was included in the Piccadilly Records mid-year review.
Two new singles, 'Through the Light' and 'Horseshoe' are scheduled for release on 28th Nov and 12th Dec respectively, marking a pivot to a more controlled and refined sound. These tracks were recorded in May 2025 at the esteemed 80Hz studios in Manchester and were produced by Greg Veryard. Physical release on 7-inch vinyl will be done in collaboration with Cracked Ankles Records.
