"she is a confidant woman / but she's not afraid of breaking hearts (never was!)..."
The hybridic retro soul / rock fusions of "Confident Woman" by North Shore Boston's Cold Engines' retro-wave / power pop / neo soul - rock power house, centered around The Brew's founder David Drouin and drummer Aaron Zaroulis, is so outstandingly filmic that it begs to be the centerpiece to an upcoming film by the likes of Quentin Tarantino or Paul Thomas Anderson. Truth be told, I had just seen PTA's masterful "One Battle After Another" just a day before finding "Confident Woman" on my electronic desk and the track absolutely embodies the scene of Perfidia Beverly Hills (played by Teyana Taylor) fully pregnant blasting off a machine gun. Ok, maybe not exactly, that might be more described as "Confident / Crazy ass Woman" but you catch my drift.
Cold Engines' soulful attack, funky persuasions, and dense musicality here feels adjacent to Curtis Mayfield's 70's soul music explosion or maybe the 80's Sophisti hybrid pop / new wave meets funk pushes of The Blow Monkeys or the propulsive music beds of more contemporary outfits like Black Star or The Roots. What ever or however you describe the sound, it does conjure up decades of iterations of funk that incorporates all manner of rock and soul into something else and I appreciate that for it's nods to iconic sounds and the sheer cinematic nature deep in it's bones.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Officially launched in 2015 with the debut record in the can, the band was started in the ashes of The Brew. Drouin and Zaroulis pivoted quickly to capture something special. With the relentless pop hooks of The Police, Queen, The Killers and The Beatles serving as inspiration, Drouin knew exactly what he was after.
Capturing the urgency and catchiness of the golden era of pop music, Drouin and Zaroulis garnered an obsession. Honing the band with additions of journeyman Boston heavyweights was necessary. Geoff Pilkington from Soul Rebel Project and Eric Reingold from Jamantics joined full time along with a slew of guest stars like Amelia Gormley, Matt Pynn, Jon Persson, John Funkhouser, Emily Garcia, Chris Plante, Seth Campbell, Jordan Holt, Adam Ezra, Audrey Ryan, Adam Saylor, Johnny Bluehorn, Andrew Fogliano, and Ben Alleman with Tim Phillips in NYC heading up the recording team.]
