"Make it a good one this time / Scramble, clamber to unearth your claim / Don’t make it a loss this time – you’re going to butt in / You’re going to find your competitive side / Walking into a disposition that you never thought would fit..."
The mysterious manifestations, wide eyed wonder and inner dread of "Oblivion" LIVE by Toronto psychedelic art-rock outfit 5th PROJEKT, and the debut single from their first LIVE EP, "Live In London", percolates around a maze of dark corners in between surreal and ultra real tensions. The moody adventure, organic, textured tickles that back of your neck instantly and crawls under you skin. I love the droning tensions, the stair stepping bending wooziness that feels like somewhere between a drunken stumble and straight up hallucination. The blend of prog rock shapes is fascinating and becomes more defined upon repeated listens. I started to feel both the ghosts of 70's prog and psych adjacent to Amon Düül II or early Floyd, I also felt splinters of 90's prog / indie of artists like Portishead (circa Dummy) and Radiohead (Talks Show Host).
In it's totality, "Oblivion" LIVE is absolutely perfect. It breathes, it allows the spaces in between to be part of the narrative. I adore Sködt McNalty’s artful guitar work that builds drama and folds in on itself in interesting ways (plus if I wasn't as bald as a cue ball I would have that his amazing hair style). Peter Broadley's boomy / fuzzy bass sounds rolls and vibes along with David Pake's expressive drum work creating a groove that is both rock steady but feels emotionally on unsteady ground as well (love this duality). This groundwork, framework that undulates, flirts, stomps, explodes in truly nuances ways is the perfect stage for guitarist / vocalist Tara Rice's magnetic vocal countenance. The way the lyrics tumble off her tongue feel like they are birthed for the first time, as if not sung but exorcised, mystical and existing between the wake and sleep state.
Crushing hard on this one.
“Live In London” arrives today in advance of the album’s release on May 13th, 2026 via their own independent label, Organik Rekords.
