"Hold this moment, soak it / I'll say the same thing, joking / Say you won’t sail for me / Say you want everything / Say you’re the seasons / I’ve been chasing / I am chasing / I am chasing, chasing, chasing..."
The serene artful fever of "Seasons" by coastal Canadian alt indie quartet Blush, and from their upcoming sophomore EP "In the Grey", tugs at you instantly, sparking your memory banks about breaking romance waves and quiet confusion. I am loving the gentle subversions, the sparse constructions and how the song lapses to reveal those iconic 90's guitar bends so reminiscent of indie stalwarts like Billy Corgan, Bernard Sumner or John McGeoch. This track is all about nuances that build up as they stack up in your head and heart. Those tiny moments from the background hushed vocals, the keys that you feel more than hear, the supportive bass lines, acoustic and electric guitar trade offs against beautifully languid drumming as a framework for Anton Wilson's endearing vocals pull you in many directions from soft and fuzzy to maybe difficult missed chances too.
"Hold this feeling, steal it
Green secret potion, chokingSay you won’t sail for me
Say you want everything
Say you’re the reason
I’ve been changing
I've been changing
I've been changing, changing, changing"
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Built on airy guitars, laid-back rhythms, and a warm, lo-fi glow, “Seasons” captures Blush. at their most relaxed and reflective. The song unfolds patiently, favouring atmosphere over urgency, and leans into the band’s love of shoegaze textures and melodic restraint. Equal parts chill and immersive, it feels like a memory replaying itself – familiar, comforting, and slightly out of reach.
The accompanying video mirrors the song’s dream-like quality, unfolding in soft focus and muted tones. With its washed-out visuals and unhurried pace, the video feels less like a narrative and more like a feeling – fleeting moments stitched together, as if caught between waking and sleep.
“‘Seasons’ feels like a dream that just keeps looping,” says lead vocalist and guitarist Anton Wilson. “I think this song speaks pretty strongly to our roots as a band. It reminds me of picnic jam sessions in the park, it reminds me to take a breath, and it reminds me to never stop chasing.”]
I don't like to make bets, but I bet that "Seasons" will undoubtedly take you back to impactful moments in your past, maybe great memories, maybe painful or in between. Hell, it may even have you looking up old friends.
