"Just give us everything we ask for / Just take the risk or lose it all / Vultures are made / When bad numbers never end / Just take the risk or lose it all..."
The wild abandon, the ferocity, the politico punk and feral dreaminess of "Skyscrapers Soaring, Yet We're Drowning" by Stavanger - Norway noise rock trio Poor Bambi, and the title track from their debut album (dropping today), comes out of the gate like a flood of artful noise and maybe even Italian police cars screaming too (at least in my head). After the initial burst of sound, the song settles into a wonderfully fierce groove and really loving the non-standard, expressive drum beat, big booming bass bottom guitar edges and punchy guitar lines as a framework for Sarah Hestness' vocal countenance that is appropriately strident, passionately driven and just sounds so very alive. It's funny while I might describe this song as alt rock, or noise rock, I do feel splinters of blues rock even though this is far from classic rock, I actually thought of Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks" or "Death Letter by the White Stripes", it might be the shimmy shake in the beat or the lovely sparseness in terms of some of the constructions, the rock architecture.
When the song gets massive, it really get massive, the sound huge and tubular, cavernous, tribal, with the back beat still in tow. Amazing.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[The song is a dark, confrontational noise rock statement about greed, ambition, and insatiable desire. Sharp, almost venomous vocals demand attention from the very first line, pulling you into a world trapped in the endless grind of a system that takes more than it gives. While some soar higher, others are left drowning. The hook mirrors the title, while the bridge cuts even deeper, confronting the inevitability of failure. With a driving, almost haunting bassline the track holds a tension that keeps you on edge until the very last note.]
Sarah Hestness and her bandmates drummer Simen Amudrud and guitarist Espen Eidem obviously are a well oilded machine, a married trio that finish each others artistic sentences.

LYRICS
Just give us everything we ask for
Just take the risk or lose it all
Vultures are made
When bad numbers never end
Just take the risk or lose it all
Two times the charm
Third time’s the end
Two times, no harm
No time to mend
Vultures are made
When bad numbers never end
Two times the charm
Third time’s the end
Skyscrapers soaring, yet we’re drowning
Is there no loyalty alive?
You see it all, but shut your eyes
You can’t deny
Tell us what you’re really made of
Cards declined, now roll the dice
Insatiable and thirsty
You took the risk, we take it all
Two times the charm
Third time’s the end
Two times, no harm
No time to mend
Vultures are made
When bad numbers never end
Two times the charm
Third time’s the end
Skyscrapers soaring, yet we’re drowning
Is there no loyalty alive?
You see it all, but shut your eyes
You can’t deny
You’ve met a dead end
There’s no diamonds
No need to search your pockets
This is the end
Skyscrapers soaring, yet we’re drowning
Is there no loyalty alive?
You see it all, but shut your eyes
You can’t deny
