"Innait / 4 billion children / 400 million sons / you've got 2 that can fly / you've got 2 that can run..."
The propulsive dark politico folk cinematic sweep of "Innait", by Rhode Island based indie artist David Brites, casts imagery in your head almost instantly. Crafted on a sense of historical weight, on droning sounds that conjure up the passage of time, pushing acoustic guitars that sometimes bend into dissonant paces, the simple but highly effective percussive strike on a breathing high hat, the rolling thunder of booming drums, eruptive electric guitars and other sounds like storms in the distance all provide a darkly moody framework for Brites spoken word. A dark filmic story that feels like a story of betrayal, of someone who goes to war and pays the ultimate sacrifice and his brothers who is being hunted by our government back home. The myriad of narrative here feels like a thousand real stories and somehow feels psychically connected to an amazing current film by PTA.
The lyrical sweep as the collective pain and call for sanity in times of war feels exquisitely relevant and disturbing within the dark secrets uncovered by our American government and many governments around the world. I remember when I was in my 20's and found out that one of the stepping stones, reasons for embarking fully into the Vietnam war, the Bay of Tonkin incident, was absolutely made up. A destructive constructed bullshit in order to get into the war. As you get older you find those kinds of lies told all throughout history and your soul your trust in the government shrinks each time. Now we have the most corrupt administration ever in our country and your trust is just shattered to dust on the ground until a cold win blows it away.
All these moral questions and collapses bubble to the surface with a song like "Innait" because those of us who are not rich enough, not situated in "society" enough or not the right color pay the heaviest price during war time. This song bends all these moral inconsistencies into knots. We send our sons and daughter to war until they are forever changed and then a lot of those same forces who sent them to hell and back shun them. Same old story.
Now, don't get me wrong. The men and women who go to war give of themselves as patriots but if the war is not just, if the reasons are framed on immoral fractured toothpicks than those soldiers who were patriots to a beloved constitution were also bloodied pawns to the worst kinds of people you can imagine.
"Innait" feels like an introduction to a bigger story. Feels like a song that might inspire the next Netflix or Hulu binger. I mentioned PTA. Maybe he or other talented film makers will here this track and wake up sweaty with another story to tell.

LYRICS
(verse)
Innait
4 billion children
400 million sons
you've got 2 that can fly
you've got 2 that can run
We need all the able heroes
that didn't know they were
before they're born
war is where the heroes come out
and we need yours for the storm
war is where the hero comes out
and we need yours
now whatdy'a say
(chorus)
C'mon Innait, Innait
(verse)
Innait, you're eldest son is dead now
he gave his life for honor
saved a whole brigade
Innait he killed about a hundred
we're gonna give him a gold star
give him a parade
We know he didnt wanna be there
but he made the most of it didn't he
we know he didnt wanna be there
but he made the most of it
Innait no tears
(chorus)
C'mon Innait
(verse)
Innait, two sons have disappeared into the wild
Innait they've taken something important
we wanna help them
before they do something they cant take back
We have enemies everywhere
we think they may be lost among them
we have enemies eveywhere
we think they may be lost
Innait, get in touch
don't take too long
(chorus)
C'mon Innait
(Verse)
Innait, you see your son betrayed us
he's got a gun
got different names different faces
you see this picture?
when did you last see him?
is this the one?
You see all this happening?
is he the one? is he the one?!
You see all this happening?
Is he the one? is he the one?!
(Chorus)
C'mon Innait

David Brites is a fully independent, unsigned artist from Rhode Island. Inspired by the 60's and 70's counter culture movements, these American journey songs are arranged around a simple acoustic rhythm guitar and slow build with layers of haunting analog synth, piano, bass, drums - occasionally punctuated by piercing electric guitar solos. Brites' voice characterizes the subconscious of America as it turns perpetually on itself and the world, slipping further into a modern dystopia. Somewhere in this work exists a flame of hope. davidbritesmusic.com
