"Today I tried something new / Dragged my feet towards you..."
The illusory emotional gate of "Wasted" by Tender Glue, the musical moniker of Poland born & bred, New York based Tom Gluewicki, feels like a embracing cold water splash in the morning, part retrospection, part reboot. Like that refreshing splash is it brief, likely too short for some and begs to be longer and maybe will be when played live (one can cross one's fingers after all) but after repeated listens, I think it feels perfect. The propulsive sense of running to catch something, even one's breath is expressed in a wonderful indie folk rock rhythm, a subtle pushing bass line, easy drum beat and vibrant surfy noir lead guitar. I have always liked Gluewicki's vocal countenance, tender, vulnerable and I like what feels like an ever so slight accent that makes his words have their own flavor when he sings them.
He says this about "Wasted":
"‘Wasted’ is about questioning time, choices, and the people we run toward without fully knowing why. It reflects living recklessly, moving forward on impulse, and wondering if all the years that led to a moment were meaningful or simply lost. It is about uncertainty, hesitation, and not knowing if patience will ever pay off."
For me "Wasted" feels like an introduction to a larger story just waiting to unfold and I like that. I also like the easiness, the lean maybe to late 70's folk rock and the early aughts iterations of such. All so inviting.
Lovely.
LYRICS
Dragged my feet towards you
Have I wasted all those years
Wasted all those years
To meet you
Drove my car off the bridge
It’s not all what you think
Have I wasted all those years
Wasted all those years
To meet you
Decided to wait longer
Is it going to be worth it
I don’t know
I don’t know
