"light me up / and cover me I'm done / as I fall out of your bed / not ruled but something yet / pulls me back in here..."
The indie folk rock embrace and gentle bloodletting of "Saintmaking" by Irish duo Basciville , comprised of Wexford born multi-instrumentalist brothers Cillian and Lorcan Byrne, is vastly dynamic, dreamily chill while purging dense poetry bathed in melancholy but also brimming with hopeful wonder. There are many key signatures that make this song, this sound special from the nuanced productions, the decision to run soft and then only so hard musically so the lyrical content and Cillian's vocal countenance does the emotional heavy lifting, perfectly situated in the mix, no shoegaze aesthetics buring the vocals, no not here and that is so appreciated.
Interestingly I thought of both R.E.M and Radiohead while absorbing this track. Specifically some of the keyboard passages with it's hanging notes did have me flashing on Thom Yorke some and I could not but help but feel a hint of Michael Stipe in Cillian's potent wail. Loving the musical sensations here, the beautiful pain of "Saintmaking".
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Brimming with lyrical self-reflection and quiet resolve, "Saintmaking" sees the Wexford-born brothers turn inward, confronting their own tendencies to romanticize what's out of reach. With textured production, soaring vocals, and a slow-burning intensity, it's a track that wrestles with distraction, displacement, and the decision to stay present in the life you've chosen.]
["'Saintmaking' is about calling yourself out on your shit and giving something an honest go," the band explain. "In a lot of ways we're wired to look over our shoulder at what's potentially passing us by because of where we've planted ourselves. This song was born out of a feeling of wanting to let go of that pull and to focus on what's gained rather than what's lost."]

Lyrics
light me up
light me up
and cover me I'm done
as I fall out of your bed
not ruled but something yet
pulls me back in here
on the self
did we say it again
are we sainted
tell yourself don't be so proud
I know it's just the nothing sound
repeating in your head
and if we offend don't be burnt out
I know I know we play so loud in all
our saintmaking
and boreal thoughts
that we hang our instincts on
but if all could just be said
if cool intentions end
then
what could we uncover
here
in the self
but did we say it again
are we sainted to
tell yourself don't be so proud
I know it's just the nothing sound
repeating in your head
and if we ascend don't be burnt out
I know I know we play so loud in all
our saintmaking
bow to the one who sits
in patient horror
and
I was a god before
you pulled me under your thumb
under the gun
I had a name we once belonged
to everyone
to everyone
and she said
all of her flowers bend
backwards toward the sun so
innocent and warm
and that we ruin
such an honest bloom
with all of our offerings and
all this saintmaking
but if I could
I would surely put
an end to the suffering and just
figure it out and bend
I know
nothing comes from all
of us
saint
make
king
Another aspect of "Saintmaking" that I appreciate, love is the songwriting constructions. The use of a pre-chorus, a bridge or sort that doesn't connect to a prevailing chorus but instead diverts to a vocal outro / coda is so refreshing. This technique happens from time to time but it is rare, hell, a bridge even today is rare.
"Saintmaking" is simply put, a beautiful surprise and just a mere glimpse from their long-awaited second album 'Love In The Time Of The State', arriving March 13th via Faction Records.
