"I take a bite of another / Apple he picked for my mother / I sold my heart to the butcher /Ahhhhh..."
The fuzz saturated A24 alt pop barbed sonic tattoo of "CULT DADDY", by Los Angeles grit pop duo ill peach, is a potent cocktail for those who like to move, dance, run chasing midnight moons. I guess those who label things would place this under the "adult contemporary pop" umbrella and yes that is a huge umbrella so they might be technically correct but not spiritually so. There is a lot of genre mixing here and that appeals to me. Within the incredibly magnetic fuzz bass sound and bending metal, I feel shards of industrial punk, encased in the tubular synths I feel more Gary Numan-esque new wave than synth pop, percolating in the drum beats there is a sense of Burundi beats but slowed down into something more post punk and Jess Corazza's magnetic vocal countenance is in the pit of this sound with vocal melodies that again are a lot of things, East Coast art punk, hints of reggae and more. In a previous review of ill peach I said this of their sound:
[The trip hop / alt rock beats, machine or real are exquisite too, as is the percolations of ambient atmospheres, glacial keys, dashes of 8-bit, all pushing against, leaning on Corazza's magnetic vocal countenance offering dark and light streams of poetry.]
AND I stand by those words but with "CULT DADDY" the sonic stew has even more elements, more spices. If Jess Corazza and Pat Morrissey (and cohorts) cook like they craft music I WANT to taste what is simmering in their crock pot.
YES, "CULT DADDY" is a treat, feast for the ears and like an amalgam of Nine Inch Nails, KiNG MALA, HONEYMOAN and Adam Ant (yes Adam Ant) it is it's own sonic universe. The production, the sonics are abstract and glorious.
The song / video was birthed by true inspirations - see LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Equal parts cutting and captivating, the video, directed by Lucy Sandler, finds Jess Corazza detailing the inner workings of a secret cult. “This song is based on a true story,” Corazza explains. “A friend of ours worked for a men’s group centered around masculinity and semen retention—only later realizing it was a cult. Fascinated by the things he overheard, he stayed long enough to watch the ‘leader’ present his very pregnant Italian wife as immaculate conception—only to realize she may have been the cult leader all along. This song is part of a larger collection of stories told from a fly-on-the-wall perspective—shaped by what happens when no one thinks they’re being listened to.”]
Oh and the video gives me Ari Aster vibes, hence the A24 reference at the beginning of this brain-stream. Love it. Check it out, now.
That's it, be well, be safe out in this crazy fucked up world.

LYRICS
I take a bite of another
Apple he picked for my mother
I sold my heart to the butcher
Ahhhhh
I trim the fat make my world thin
Wax paper lies buried in him
Rip out my rib let him crawl in
Big cult daddy
Holding the knife
Cult cult daddy
Cut like a lie
Hung me to dry
Big cult daddy
Took it all with a smile
Wrapped my veins tight ‘round his finger
Dried up my spit, left me bitter
Ripped all my teeth out for dinner
Ahhhhhhh
Served up my guts, rare and bloody
Let him carve me down to nothing
My mother begged, still I fed him
Ahhhhhhh
Big cult daddy
Holding the knife
Cult cult daddy
Cut like a lie
Hung me to dry
Big cult daddy
Took it all with a smile
I'm still looking
For my heart
Locked away in a jar
Left me hollow
Chewed me raw
paid the price forever
Lie, lie, lie,
Big cult daddy
Took it all with a smile
Big cult daddy
Cult cult daddy
Big cult daddy
Took it all with a smile
