"I'm not usually / one to shrug the world off / but something lately / has sparked a change..."
The sardonic spit and proggy indie rock polish of "Wanna See You" by Melbourne based The Great Emu War Casualties, and from their debut album "Public Sweetheart No.1" dropping on Friday March 27th, works / excites / enthralls on so many levels. It's maybe the interconnected puzzle piece musical constructions, Aussie Saskia Clapton's wonderfully careening bass lines, the rhythm guitar that lays back in the groove so casually, Nepalese Bibek Tamang's staggery drum beats, Liverpudlian frontman Joe Jackson's ultra potently artful lead guitar breaks that sing and scream while not overtaking the set pieces, Melbourne based synth player/ backing vocalist Cat Sanzaro's memorable spins on both counts and Jackson's vocal performance that feels at once, droll, conversationally sweeping, and smartly wry.
Listening to this sonically dynamic / emotionally pithy track on repeat and I am hearing more nuances throughout each time. The sensation in some ways, in terms of genre blending, might have an expressly 80's vibe (or early aughts vibe) to me for some reason. That could just be me, probably is and well, it could certainly grace the next Netflix or Hulu binger because it feels dense with 'relationship stuff'.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Following on from their earlier single this year ‘Donut’, ‘Wanna See You’ is proof that the band can write a happy song - if they choose to. Their previous three EPs sing to broken hearts, existential reflections, and candid commentary on life, but as the band moves into album territory, ‘Wanna See You’ breaks up that anxiety and reminds us that life can still be ok. Joe Jackson shares:
“Wanna See You is proof that I can write a happier song and just choose not to 95% of the time. It’s actually not that happy is it? It’s a simple song about the fact that I wanna see you every time you call and sometimes that’s all you need.”
Even for their ‘happy song’, The Great Emu War Casualties have demonstrated their skill in contrast, combining the light and the dark through their bleak but evocative imagery, and bright, spirited musicality. Continuing with their sharp and observant lyricism, ‘Wanna See You’ explores that feeling of wanting to see someone when they call.]

The Great Emu War Casualties turn disillusionment into transcendent indie rock.
‘Public Sweetheart No.1’, their debut LP, is produced by the band themselves, mixed by Wayne Connolly, and mastered by Jason Mitchell.
Further cementing their standing as impulsive, expressive, art-rockers, ‘Public Sweetheart No.1’ is a dynamic blend of energy and introspection. With crisp percussion and driving guitar riffs throughout, the band establish an infectious rhythm, and the dual vocals glide with conviction and vulnerability. The Great Emu war Casualties demonstrate their maturity in sustaining the momentum throughout, culminating in unapologetic and emotional hooks.
With praise and support from Triple J, BBC, Pilerats, Fender, and The Guardian, and collaborations with Nate Brenner (Tuneyards), Cal Barter (Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile), and Alex Newport (Bloc Party) under their belt, The Great Emu War Casualties’ impressive release catalogue bears witness to an indie brilliance that is ripe for a wider audience.
“It is a blunt and honest self assessment of my own behaviour over an extended period of time and the various ways in which my behaviour has affected the people closest to me, so I’ve at least tried to make it catchy in order to better live with myself. It’s about the clarity I’ve found in going ‘back to basics’, in taking the chaos and noise of the world and throwing it in the bin in favour of honesty. It’s an anthemic apology, with a hint of ‘sorry, not sorry’ sprinkled on top.”
