"Time doesn’t mean a thing / You love me then you go and leave me / I’m not who I used to be / You make heartache look so easy..."
The artful twisted paperclip, emotional pain of "My Broken Heart" by Los Angeles sonic / emotional powerhouse Child Seat, is, yet again, another stunner and maybe the most passionate and actualized track from vocalist Madeleine Mathews and partner in arms, Josiah Mazzaschi, as co-songwriter, musician, accomplished exquisite producer and universe builder. Mazzaschi, as the sonic builder, has pulled out all the stops on this one in terms of the 80's drenched gloss and Mathews voice has never sound more passionate, more artfully torn and battered up. She sings with such unfettered commitment that I always feel like she must have absolutely fried vocal chords after their recording sessions or maybe be emotionally wasted too. You listen to the sophisticated level of pop and the stylized indie rock here and I feel like you cannot just pin the 80's descriptor here. I dunno and maybe it is unimportant in the end but as an art piece here, there are elements of synth rock, prog, art rock and post punk as well.
I seem to come back to the Eurythmics in my mind when I listen to Child Seat and not only because of the core duo of Mathews and Mazzaschi sort of mirrors the relationship of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart in terms of what each brings to the table but, god, Lennox and Mathews are certainly adjacent in terms of their huge voices and the emotional depth they bring to their singing, their expressions of pain, hope, catharsis, survivorship. I also think of Yeah Yeah Yeahs (maybe especially circa 2009 'It's Blitz' Album).
"My Broken Heart" is from Child Seat's third full length "Hyperphantasia" that dropped March 13th (2026).

LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Built on pulsing new-wave textures, cinematic hooks, and a chorus that aches to be sung through tears and windshields, the track captures the tension between knowing you should walk away and not being able to let go. Whether it's a relationship or a friendship, nothing is worse than feeling like someone could so easily let you go. It’s the sound of emotional déjà vu: when you already know how the story ends, but you go back anyway. It’s the kind of heartbreak that doesn’t explode, it just lingers.
Fronted by the commanding voice of Madeleine Mathews and shaped by producer/guitarist Josiah Mazzaschi’s textured, tension-driven sound design, Child Seat continues to carve out their signature space where post-punk urgency meets disco momentum and emotional immediacy. “My Broken Heart” showcases the band at their most vulnerable and anthemic, turning romantic collapse into something irresistible and euphoric.]

Time doesn’t mean a thing
You love me then you go and leave me
I’m not who I used to be
You make heartache look so easy
While you’re at the bar drinking
With all your new friends
Does it ever cross your mind
How I’ve been?
Cause I don’t wanna give you up (do do do do, do do do do)
But in the end I always lose
Or should I risk more heartache? (do do do do, do do do do)
Just to keep a piece of you
You make losing me
Look so easy (look so easy)
You make loving me
Look so hard (look so hard)
You make losing me
Look so easy (look so easy)
I blame you for my broken heart
My broken heart (do do do do, do do do do)
My broken heart (do do do do, do do do do)
My broken heart
Guess it meant nothing
Was it easier for you to leave me bleeding?
I just keep hoping
That one day you might finally see me
But while you’re off on mars
Pretending like I don’t exist
I’ll be hating myself
For letting you back in
Cause I don’t wanna give you up (do do do do, do do do do)
But in the end I always lose
Or should I risk more heartache? (do do do do, do do do do)
Just to keep a piece of you
You make losing me
Look so easy (look so easy)
You make loving me
Look so hard (look so hard)
You make losing me
Look so easy (look so easy)
I blame you for my broken heart
And in the end did you get everything you ever wanted?
And in the end did you get everything you could dream of?
Cause I don’t wanna give you up (do do do do, do do do do)
But in the end I always lose
Or should I risk more heartache? (do do do do, do do do do)
Just to keep a piece of you
You make losing me
