"Gripped in grief / ‘Cause I never tried to hold my baby / I never tried to hold on..."
The wonderfully cutting indie rock iterations of "Protected", by Norfolk, England based singer-songwriter, music producer and recording engineer Harry Jordan, leaves it's mark whether scratches on your skin or midnight 80's indie / 90's post punk dreams. It is a great sounding track, a testament to Jordan (a stalwart member of various bands) as a decade long recording engineer / producer whose client list has included acts like Keo, Far Caspian, The Big Moon, Brown Horse, Opal Mag, Hallan, plus founding his own Bam Bam Studios / Bam Bam Records. The sound here is not like the early aughts re-introduction of 80's / 90's indie but to me a more earnest retelling that seriously feels like sonic found footage of that period.
Harry says this about the track:
"In a lot of ways it’s about self-reflection and growth, and it also feels like a bit of a letter to my wife, Sophie. She had her life together pretty early on, while mine felt completely all over the place. I was away gigging all the time with Eades and Far Caspian, earning almost nothing and generally muddling my way through life. I was so obsessed with trying to make music my career that a lot of the other areas of my life often got pushed aside. As I became more aware of that, I started to feel like a bit of a burden. Even though we were madly in love, I always had this feeling that she deserved better. In a strange way, that feeling ended up becoming a huge source of motivation for me — it pushed me to find ways to turn my passion for music into something sustainable, so I could eventually build the kind of life I felt she deserved. I still strive for that every day."
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[ Norfolk native Harry Jordan releases new single ‘Protected’. His debut solo EP This Beautiful Life is out April 17th and an EP launch show will take place at Voodoo Daddy’s in Norwich on April 18th. Citing influences numbering the likes of Wilco, Sparklehorse, Neil Young, Alex G, Justin Vernon, Big Thief, Chris Cohen, the resulting sound is an open-heated homage to the classic indie songbook.
First coming to attention as co-frontman of cult indie band Eades - with whom he has received acclaim from The Guardian, NME, FADER, BBC 6 Music and more - Harry has since made strides as an in demand producer and engineer since founding his residential Bam Bam Studios with acts like The Big Moon, Keo, Sam Tompkins, Brown Horse, Our Girl, Bleech 9:3, Opal Mag and more passing through its doors.
The lean approach to songwriting - and the thoughtfulness in restraint across both composition and production - stands in sync with the emotional earnestness at the core of the lyrical themes. This is again reflected on ‘Protected’ - blaring into life a wail of feedback, before a warm, classic indie riff ushers in Harry’s big-hearted lyrical delivery.]
‘Cause I never tried to hold my baby
I never tried to hold on
So pardon me
For all the times I hurt you lately
With my selfish needs
Oh, my heart begins to show
Our love was long protected
Our love was long protected
Now I’m breaking of the rains,
Once again…
The echo rolls
Of a darker man I used to know
The dance tax, paid from my soul
So sorry please
You know I never meant to leave you lately
Alone lonely
Oh, my heart starts to show
Our love was long protected
Our love was long protected
Breaking of the rains,
once again…
(Solo)
Oh, my heart starts to show
Our love was long protected
Our love was long protected
Breaking of the rains,
once again…
Now my hands shaking x4
Now I’m falling from the rains
Once again…
The Chicken Wheel will take you to the AP Go Fund Me- and any amount is so appreciated!
