"Evening sky / Turning into red / Boy in town / Lights a cigarette..."
The sparkling retro future pop manifestations of "Tomboi" by Lukka, a NYC-based psychedelic synth-rock band led by Germany born singer songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Franzi Szymkowiak with Ashley Gonzalez (bass) and Simon “SiFi” Fishburn (drums), snap / crackle and pop in wonderfully dreamy ways with propulsive bass grooves, perfect in the pocket drumming with electronic slaps, ultra cool spacey synth arpeggios, all as a comely off kilter framework for Franzi's vocal countenance that flows somewhere between whispery cool and trippily commanding. I mentioned the retro futuristic vibe which I realize sound oxymoronic but within film and all forms of art, the sort of blend of before and yet to be artistically creates interesting tensions and I think in "Tomboi" the synth sound with ghosts of computerized constructions or kind of casio-fied aesthetics add to that almost imperceptible feeling of vintage futurism. Not sure if I am even conveying what is in my head in the correct way but I love culture cues from different times in art as touchstones to connect with and I feel 80's new wave and mid aughts puzzle pieces being smashed together along with even 60's blues / dance / surfy constructions that when mixed pushes abstract envelopes. Some of those touchstones like doo wop (and by extension doo wop punk), alt pop, fantasy rock / new wave and indie rock have me feeling a sort of connective cross-generational amalgamic tissue of artists like The Honeys, Melody's Echo Chamber, Empire Of The Sun, Metric.
Loving the dance, digging the vibe and where it makes my head go.
Franzi about "Tomboi":
"The song started with a guitar riff I actually came up with on the synth. It had this cool melody, so I just kept building around it—messing with chords, letting it loop, seeing where it wanted to go. The lyrics flew through me and kinda showed up out of nowhere. You know it's one of those songs where you have to figure out what you meant after it’s already done. I guess “Tomboi” is about tapping into both your masculine and feminine sides—and actually loving that mix. I feel it’s also a self-celebration of my Gemini energy, leaning into that duality and just owning it."
