"this band is fucking cool"
The bold, bawdy, exquisitely cool sonic intersections of "strummer" by Los Angeles post rock quartet Bondo, draws out an atmosphere full of drama cut with abstractions that feel mysterious. I am loving the bass line that feels dark on the edges of 90's grunge, the dual guitar lines that come together and apart creating a sense of emotional dissonance and the drumming that holds everything apart. At this point, maybe more than ever, when I listen to music, and especially instrumental music, it all becomes imagery and a diverse stream of them flood in with this one. I also imagine, fully assume that at gigs there are many subtle exchanges between audience members, knowing looks that say, "this band is fucking cool", that something special is happening.
Also kudos to whomever recorded and engineered this track. It feels so sonically rich and raw and I love that. Bondo is comprised of Nikolas Escudero (guitar / vocals), Brian Bartus (guitar / vocals), Gerry (bass) and Cook Lee-Chobanian (drums). "Strummer" is the first glimpse of their self titled 3rd album that drops on July 24th (2026).

Los Angeles quartet Bondo write, perform and record their type of post-rock live. Limiting their tonal effects to overdrive, distortion, and delay, their mostly instrumental music is a break from typical rock methods and expands into subtleties and dynamics. This is an archetypal example of "a band". The work is a product of four individual consciences shaped into one cohesive whole.
Bondo's 2nd album, Harmonica, was recorded live to tape while drummer Cook Lee-Chobanian had a torn ACL from playing basketball at LA Fitness. The band did not want to delay as they were in a creative stride as a performing outfit. The outcome is Harmonica, 11 songs with an expansive range. Simultaneously both experimental and standard, there are some more traditional songs with verses and choruses, however, the dynamic instrumental methodology Bondo has honed over the years is the grounding force of the record.
