"I know his face and I know his voice / his clothes are still out / swinging on the line!..."
The heavy metal / feargach punk / art rock malleability of "Pissing in the pool" by UK alternative noise makers Dusker, and one of 5 glimpses of their upcoming sophomore full length dropping in 2027, cuts deeply, artistically and totally surprising ways. This is to say that if opens as one thing but becomes many things and by the time the last notes fall (and what feel like clicks of a large clock) you might, like me, be contemplating what you just listened to, experienced and ready to grab a drink before pushing play once more. I love surprises and I love tonal shifts within songs and "Pissing in the Pool" has many of both, not to mention a tightly (super tightly ) wound musicality. The progressive nature though does not minimize the emotionalaltiy of the track which can happens sometimes (to me). It doesn't rise to the level of, let's say, math rock but instead rides genre rails expertly with sort of jazz scarred rock dissonance at times and musical breaks that, well, defy description (kudos to the drumming by the way as it serves the free formness of the instrumentation so wonderfully).
I look forward to the upcoming album.

After years of playing and touring in multiple bands in close-knit DIY scenes, the members of Dusker formed in Leicester in 2019 and quickly set about a string of high profile shows with the likes of Kagoule, Petrol Girls, Fresh and Peaness. Quickly developing a reputation for raucous, energetic lives shows. Debut release ‘EP 1’ marries wide-open, exploratory post-punk with math, noise and post-hardcore accents. Dancing driven guitars, strong rhythms and spitting vocals combine to show Dusker’s myriad of far-reaching influences. The record touches on concepts of platonic love, mutual support and individual empowerment. ‘EP 1’ was recorded and produced by the band’s close friend and collaborator Liquid Tony of Liquid Tone Productions and was self-released in December 2019. Follow-up ‘EP 2’, released on Leeds’ Muzai Records in August 2020, is a confirmation of intent and a further sonic refinement which received airplay on Dean Jackson’s BBC Introducing show and press across Europe and Japan. Fusing raucous punk energy with swooping, contemplative melodies and feedback-riddled textures, Dusker both covered new musical ground and solidified their vein of noisey post punk.
