Faancy Anemals and the stomped electronic heart, grand artfulness and emo underneath of "Sleep Tonight"

The stomped electronic heart, grand artfulness and emo underneath of  "Sleep Tonight", by Frederick, Maryland's synthwave outfit Faancy Anemals, captured my enotional attention right away. Maybe because there is something audacious here and romantic in it's intentions, something old school but forever in the way fantasy in art, literature and film feel. Maybe this synthwave outfit could have just as easily been named Fanciful Anemals. "Sleep Tonight" is a beautiful sonic exercise in mixing layers of varying textures. It opens with a gnarly sort of industrial punk synth drill signalling something caustic but offset by a beat, that further signals celebration and dance, softens it and the vocal countenance offered by Alex Dew, smooth, vulnerable, artistically poised with art rock flavors takes it to another level right away. While his vocal style is hard to perfectly describe I feel his voice being adjacent to other stylists like Bowie, like Bryan Ferry, like Martin Fry (ABC). Dew's voice fits this aesthetic so well, I mean, as the track moves along there are nods to fantasy rock, to 80's new wave, expecially in the sort of glam meets power pop lead guitar sounds and beautifully vast synths, nods to vintage electronica while feeling like future pop too. Call me a sci-fi, fantasy geek but any song that feels like it could have been in Neverending Story moves me in magical ways and "Sleep Tonight" possesses that kind of magic.
