"the stars that shine / lighting up this soul of mine / and what the hell you came alive / to blue ocean eyes..."
The folkster shades and psych indie rock illuminations of "Blue Ocean Eyes" by Lukka, a NYC-based psychedelic synth-rock band led by Germany born singer songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Franzi Szymkowiak with Ashley Gonzalez (bass) and Simon “SiFi” Fishburn (drums), feel somehow late 70's classic psychedelic, 90's slacker and mid aughts garage rock blendo all at the same time. There is a vast beauty here, from the falling slippery bass lines, to the pearly phazing sheen to the wavy guitar strums, to the super chill but anchoring snappy drumming, to the audaciously wonky stretched out synth fluttering and, of course, Franzi's starry eyed vocal countenance, trippily in it's bewildered optimism and spacey hope.
The sensations, the imagery feels indie filmic. A song I could see so appropriately timely against surf films and contemporary films like One Battle After Another that mine 70's films. Last time around when referring to Lukka's aesthetic I mentioned feeling "a sort of connective cross-generational amalgamic tissue of artists like The Honeys, Melody's Echo Chamber, Empire Of The Sun, Metric" and I still feel those adjacent artistic attitudes. The sounds that Lukka crafts feels, in the end, perfectly perfect and fully self aware, fully present and real like artistic self actualization.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[“Blue Ocean Eyes” the third single from their upcoming third album Wendekind, (that dropped on June 5th, 2026) Discussing the single, Lukka notes “Blue Ocean Eyes” is “about feeling misunderstood by someone you love.”]

LYRICS
Step Inside
Into Another One's Life
You Never Know What Lies Behind
Two Blue Ocean Eyes
As You See
Many True Colors Can Be
I Always Learnt Not To Reveal
Them Behind These Eyes
No It's Not Me
When You See Me Around Their Company
In My Life
Sometimes Saw The Brightest Light
In The Middle Of The Darkest Night
With Blue Ocean Eyes
Stars That Shine
Lighten Up That Soul Of Mine
I Wonder How They Became Alive
Two Blue Ocean Eyes
No It's Not Me At All
When Summer Comes And Snow Begins To Fall
Come To Me
Step Inside To Find The Real
Stop
And When You Look Twice
And Watch The Scene
Feel
Can You See Behind Me
The Chicken Wheel will take you to the AP Go Fund Me- and any amount is so appreciated!
