The swoony sadness and pervasive synthpop hypnosis of "The Flame" by Tania Cassette, the solo debut of Tania Costello also known as the voice Glass Spells, draws you in easily with it's atmosphere that leans into both nostalgic and futuristic places at the same time. While Glass Spells (who I've covered a about a dozen times) feels seeded from 80's outfits like Air 89, Romeo Void, Yazoo, Animotion, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie And The Banshees or contemporary artists like Kraków Loves Adana and Ötzi, I am feeling subtle nuances here that feel a bit less darkwave, less tinged with gothic lineage (though still present). Maybe because this somehow wears it's dance music vibe right away, with the brightness of some of the synth lines and Tania's melodic soft sadness. The vibe stripped back and so bold in it's naked production make me think of a multicolored dance floor as opposed to a dark Bauhaus-ian venue. Cross generational pop luminaries like Clout, Robyn, Lykke Li or Nu Shooz popped in my head and the feeling that anything that Tania involves herself with has emotional / artful weight.
