“here we are again / repetition once more / I can taste the air / we've been here before..."
The gothic stare, staggery dark romanticism of "Compulsion" by London-based trio Black Doldrums, and from their upcoming 3rd studio album "Repetition Compulsion" (set to drop on Nov 13th 2026 via Fuzz Club), feel like a long tense walk toward something, feels like clinched fists and a pounding heartbeat. I am loving the driving drum beat that literally leaps on the thumping bass notes, the droning synths, the post noir ratatatting guitar lines and frontman / guitarist Kevin Gibbard's escapist evocative vocal drawl that (to some) might suggest an amalgam of Ian Curtis, Grian Chatten of Fontaines D.C. and Peter Murphy (Bauhaus). This is a sound that you can easily get lost in, maybe adjacent to Joy Division's "Transmission" but bigger with more swagger and alt rock mental chaos.
Gibbard shares this about the track:
“I wrote ‘Compulsion’ as the second part of our first single, ‘Repetition’. It originally started life as one piece of work, but naturally split into two separate songs. That gave us the opportunity to directly reference ‘Repetition; while continuing the central themes of the album and reinforcing the idea that all of the songs are connected in some way. The opening line, “Here we are again, repetition once more”, immediately brings the two songs together. Where ‘Repetition’ has a more dirge-like feel that literally reflects the idea of repetition, ‘Compulsion; has a greater sense of forward motion, building in intensity as it develops. We’re really proud of how the track fits within the wider concept of the album. We wanted to take a considered, interconnected approach, and I think ‘Compulsion’ really captures that idea. It feels like a natural progression from ‘Repetition’, while also taking the story and the sound somewhere new.”
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[The newly-announced ‘Repetition Compulsion’ album completes Black Doldrums’ interconnected “State of Mind Trilogy”: a three-album exploration of the psychological forces that shape identity, memory and human connection, which began with their 2022 debut, ‘Dead Awake’, and most recently, 2024’s ‘In Limerence’.]

Kevin Gibbard and Sophie Landers produce a contemporary form of gothic post-punk. Their songs contain hook and lead tribal drums and euphoric guitar textures that frame introspective lyrics. They are known for their intense live performances, creating their own style of post-punk driven by overwhelmingly vicious drums, distinctive atmospheric guitar chords and melodic bass.
Layers of analogue synths, chorus-soaked guitars and driving rhythms frame songs that are intimate, immersive and emotionally precise, while the album’s expansive production gives each composition a striking sense of scale. Rather than relying on nostalgia, ‘Repetition Compulsion’ presents post-punk as a living, evolving form, embracing atmosphere without sacrificing melody, introspection without losing momentum, and darkness without abandoning hope.
Rich in detail, artistic ambition and emotional weight, ‘Repetition Compulsion’ is Black Doldrums’ most fully realised work to date. Bringing the “State of Mind Trilogy” to a compelling close while confidently signalling the beginning of a new chapter, the album further establishes Black Doldrums as one of London’s most distinctive voices in modern post-punk and the dark alternative underground. Arriving off the back of heavy UK and European touring over the last couple of years, ‘Repetition Compulsion’ is released into the world on November 13th 2026 through London-based independent Fuzz Club.
