"The air was cool, the lightest breeze / I waited for you beneath the trees / To celebrate, our perfect day, nothing they do could keep me away / From here with you, the clock strikes noon, and people are gathering round..."
The progressive art rock waltz and death dive of "Kin Precipice" by Late Cambrian, the Brooklyn-based future-pop /alt-rock core duo of John Wlaysewski (vocals, guitar) and Olive Hui (vocals) - along with Matthew Milligan (bass), Eric Zeender (guitar), Ben Weiss (drums) and Gaby Alter on keyboards, is a much needed escape from our current madness that results in our collective sadness. As composer, singer-songwriter, producer and musical magician, Wlaysewski has a way of injecting youthful wide eyed wonder and bewilderment straight into your heart. "Kin Precipice" may have dark story abstractions at the core but your brain doesn't read it right away because the musical shapes feel so absolutely alluring, beckoning you to take the narrators hand and go wherever he leads you to. The song flirts while the vocal melody cajoles, the twisting, whistling, swaying orchestrations screams fable but the intertwined melancholia saturated on every other word confuses too as there is a sense of mystery and danger beneath the glittering sonic baubles. But then fables can turn horrific sometimes can't they.
This is a perfect song other than the fact that it could have easily been 40 seconds or even a minute longer but I guess it is better to not overstay your welcome as they say.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Kin Precipice is about the joy of finding a new family... (inspired by Midsommar)]
[The term literally translates to "kin precipice" from the Old Scandinavian/Swedish word ättestupa.]
[According to Nordic folklore and historical myths, an ättestupa was a steep cliff where elderly or infirm community members would throw themselves (or be pushed) to their deaths. This ritual senicide was allegedly practiced during prehistoric times to avoid burdening the family or clan during times of famine and resource scarcity.]

LYRICS
The air was cool, the lightest breeze. I waited for you beneath the trees.
To celebrate, our perfect day, nothing they do could keep me away. From here with you, the clock strikes noon, and people are gathering round.
Amazing sights from left to right, found family I love, all bathed in light. Each one in ceremonial masks, if you want to leave, now’s the time
to ask yourself does your heart ring true. No one will judge if this isn’t for you. They’ll tie us down, bound and gagged, so no one can hear you
Scream take me oh take me away from here
You’ll scream take me oh
Take me away, from here
scold me
Hold me
This is the only way
So many ways I’ve felt alone
My life with you I call it home
I pledge myself my darling true
There’s just one thing we have to do this
June 19th the sun is so high. You bring the hammer and I’ll bring the pie. Advance in masks with our new blood.
Without the drugs you know that they would
Scream
Take me away oh take me away from here
I’ll scream with you oh take me away from here
Hold you scold you
This is the only way
You’ll scream
Take me oh take me away
From here
I’ll scream with you oh take me away. From here.
Hide me quickly
Before they know I’m gone

Late Cambrian is a band that thrives in the tension between beauty and decay, stitching together sounds that feel both ancient and nervy-new. Drawing from art-rock, post-punk, and a low, humming undercurrent of experimental noise, their music moves like shifting strata—patient, heavy, and unexpectedly luminous. Melodies surface and erode, rhythms lurch and lock in, and the result is a sound that feels lived-in rather than polished, equal parts ritual and rupture.
Lyrically and sonically, Late Cambrian is fascinated by transformation: bodies, landscapes, memories, and the slow pressure of time itself. Their songs don’t rush for resolution; they linger, crack, and reform, inviting listeners to sit with discomfort and discover something strangely human inside it. Whether on record or onstage, Late Cambrian offers an immersive experience—music that doesn’t just play, but evolves.
