AP Track Review:
The track Steady by Sleepy Gonzales from the 2019 "Mellowtrauma" EP is, quite possibly, the most dour, maybe even depressive song on this collection. The tone of the girl / guy vox coupled with the sad, very sad piano almost feels like a claustrophobic resolution or acceptance of pain. The melody and repetitive nature of the words at the end of each stanza like a barbiturate drip casts images of youthful souls interned in a hospital ward. When I first heard this track I got chills because of people I have known who while a bit mixed up (or thought to be) where kept away from loved ones. It gives me chills to think about it.
Sleepy Gonzales from Surrey, British Columbia are Beni Hobson-Dimas, Cristian Hobson-Dimas, Allyson Lowry and Nick Moniz. Other tracks like Waterbody also feel haunting and dark but beautiful too. Lowry posseses a wonderfully moving vocal lilt. When you hear Falling Off Rainbow Road in Mario Kart, the male vox takes center lead with female vox near by and ghosting the words like a light embrace from behind. Abandoned Amusement Park, acoustically wrought and with Lowry alone and almost childlike reminds me of early Phoebe Bridgers. Oh, the sadness of youth.
