"upright and deaf to ourselves"
Wise As Weeds by singer-songwriter Kevin Healey (aka Eddie Kite) is a short but potent folk song that has lovely orchestrations. I always love Healey's vocal aesthetic which has a dramatic import, a kind of elegant artifice as if he sings with his dominant hand sweeping out like a vintage opera star or like a Mike Patton (Faith No More) of sorts, that is, if Patton did mellow alt folk songs. My weird comparative imagery aside, Wise As Weeds has an almost Celtic vibe with a kind of baroque rock tone, proud and reverent. The short moments of strings (or string sounds) and how Healey punctuates his words is formidable. For example, he hangs on "kissed" in such an interesting way. It is as if his body is coiled tight, there is so much power in those trembling vocal strains or restraints.
"Wise as Weeds" is a reflection on the global climate crisis. If only we humans could get along as well as weeds and trees, we might live to be sun-kissed again.
Lovely maan. Just lovely.
