"luminously sad and torn"
New Jersey's Modern Chemistry might just be musical alchemists. Listen to the absolutely pop surreal sounding Please, Don't Let Me Disappear and you will see what I mean. It begins like something broken, the fractured low sound might make you turn up the volume up (maybe that is the plan) and go ahead, the added volume will only make the step into the song more dramatic. The orchestrated rock feels majestic and the art rock / dream pop forward vox embraces all the majesty the sounds give. It does have a fantasy, cinematic edge, a grandeur to the sound within the melodies and every growing seemingly unstoppable crescendo. The ascent does end even though you want it to go on further. The three and a half minutes feel like two minutes. Like two minutes of a luminously sad and torn heaven.
