"about self pity and addiction"
The chorus for Swallow The Rat's canvas splattered Bird of Ill, the first single from their latest album "Leaving Room" is big and brash with bending affectations, dreamy and surreal like life through a carnival mirror. The verses get quiet with percolating electric guitar notes that are more jangly and free of distortion. The vox penetrating it all. The big ending music break is so bad ass, with fanning lead lines, chaotic drums, big big bass lines and walls of guitars. It feels like a storm of sounds. It feels like big tumultuous conflicts.
“This is a song about self pity and addiction destroying a relationship. The protagonist of the story needs to stop finding excuses and take steps to improve the situation” - Stephen Horsley

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:
Tāmaki Makaurau’s Swallow The Rat unleash the first single from their forthcoming album Leaving Room, the deliciously jangly-yet-ominous ‘Bird of Ill’, along with an obscure, collage-esque official video. Recorded and mixed by Nick Abbot at Northwestern (Foals, Robert Plant, Robyn), the track laments over self-loathing, addiction and relationships.
“This is a song about self pity and addiction destroying a relationship. The protagonist of the story needs to stop finding excuses and take steps to improve the situation” - Stephen Horsley
After recently supporting international acts Gang of Four and Sebadoh, the band featuring members Sam Vercoe, Brian Purington, Hayden Fritchley and Stephen Horsley also announce an appearance as one of SXSW’s official artists.
