"rock classicalism"
Unicorns At Heart are an alternative rock band out of Hesperia and Monrovia, California, namely Rico (rhythm guitar, vox, synth), Ryan (lead guitar, vox, keyboard), Gabriel (bass, vox) and Jordan (drums, percussion). I throw all that on the table first because, simply put, their song Fixture quietly blew me away. Maybe it was their pic but they look like your typical young surf punk or post punk or garage band and I know I was engaging in this bad sort of music critic profiling BS. I get that, but still, hearing the breath and scope of this song just surprised me in a big, big way.
Fixture with the bouncy, yet dark 60's Brit pop piano downbeats and garden rock psychedelia emotionally moves you like a sad smile. Because Unicorn At Heart are so young, some find a comparison to Disq in that both bands have this ability to write such smart and lush pop but while I fully appreciate Disq's aesthetic, it does feel (for the most part) solidly indie (punk) pop whereas Unicorn At Heart (at least on this track) has a more rock classicalism reminiscent of bands like The Kinks or XTC. Amazing.
Fixture is Unicorns at Heart's first single for Dangerbird Records Microdose Series.
