"I know you a little too well"
If it were up to me Ian Abel's first single of 2020, the sensual, lush, art pop piece Taste would be the theme song to the upcoming BOND Film, No Time To Die (are you listening Cary Joji Fukunaga?). From the onset, Abel stirs up the temperature with cool production touches and his passionate croon. The synth key down beats are delicious in a sort of kitsch meets cool way and the seriously rock forward guitar sounds (are they real or not) with the screaming lead (whether synth or guitar) adds that Bond-esque rock touch. This song has it both ways, it is able to inhabit a very sultry sort of neo soul / electro pop space but also that kind of punk lounge area with fields of pink flamingos with sparkles on them. Abel combines lo-fi and rich sounds all together creating a luscious sensual playground but maybe poking fun (or not) at it at the same time in a loving way. It works on all levels. A deeply engaging blend of genres and art pop tones.
While I relish at sharing my views (skewed or not) about music here, I can't write a better descriptor of Abel who is a prolific east coast force of nature than what is written in his press notes:
"Ian Abel (pronounced “able”) is the queer fantasy lovechild of an East Village comic book nerd with a heart of gold. With an oh-so-smooth velvety voice and sensual, psychedelic electro-pop arrangements, he’s like if Sam Smith met Robyn or Jessie Ware met James Blake, all with a side of Peter Gabriel. He’s not just your standard indie voice."
Apart from whether my assessment is correct or not, I love the vibe Taste stirs inside. Taste ends up being just plain delicious.
Of the accompanying new video co-directed by Kyle Clark, Abel offers:
“I knew going into the process of this video that I wanted to show off how insanely attractive people are when they embrace themselves, but honestly I didn‘t know the half of it,” says Ian. “I’m proud to be able to show off mine and my fellow artists’ bodies in all their glory.”

Ian Abel Releases His New Single “Taste” Along With Sexy New Video
Electropop artist Ian Abel talks about what it’s like to lust after an ex, and all the exhilaration, messiness, conflict, and sensuality that comes with it, in his sexy new song“Taste,” released May 8.
Along with the breathtaking new video co-directed by Kyle Clark, “Taste” is a riveting trap-influenced alt-pop creation: warm and cool at the same time, smooth, soothing and totally anxiety-inducing.
The video features a menagerie of performers and artists of different backgrounds, orientations, body types, and gender expressions suggestively indulging in sinful foods and naughty toys. The video simmers with the boiling-over insanity of a spurned former lover… and it’s just as hot.
