“Aftermaths and epitaphs, moon is on the murder path”
Wicked Lullaby, the title track from a gorgeous recently release album by L.A.'s dream folk theater Sneaky Little Devil (don't blame them for that descriptor, that is mine) feels, at once, organic but also kind of other worldly, on one hand, hyper-realistic with a shiny pop art sheen and on the other hand, garden rock infused with a deep soul patina and I swear, I swear that I could (if allowed to time travel) see this song on a 1975 episode of both Soul Train and The Midnight Special. It has that cross generational- cross genre special quality and a definite 70's sound when in some ways music seemed more embracing and tolerant of all styles. It was a time when enterprising hit-makers would blend all sorts of genres into sultry stews of whatever would capture the public's imagination, but I digress.
Sneaky Little Devil are singers and songwriters Gregory and Sarah Scott with other killer musicians with killer instruments at their disposal. Gregory laying down keys/ synths and fat drums courtesy of his skills and his 1966 (Pre-Tama) MIJ Trap Kit, Chris Buzea laying guitar down on his Gretsch G5420T Electromatic holly body, Maxwell Pierce, bass on his Nash PB-63 and Sarah crooning into the Cloud JRS-34. Sneaky Little Devil is obsessed with analog affectations and recording to vinyl.
Wicked Lullaby also feels like art rock with the curious, dramatic lyrics as in “Aftermaths and epitaphs, moon is on the murder path,” beautifully sung by Sarah Scott. Check out the dreamy sci-fi accompanying video.
