"Attention merchants are always ahead of the game"
From his 2020 "With You" album, Adam Scharf, on his track Give It A Rest condemns but also forgives us all for our online behavior that is often times steeped in our own self absorption and need to be seen or payed attention to. Are our lives that vapid and sad? Maybe. In between the lines, he acknowledges that billions are spent on making us this way, so if it is any consolation, at least we are all the crack heads not the drug pushers, "It's not our fault... we don't stand a chance."
Within the dark synths, Give It A Rest has beautifully sad downbeats and Scharf's pretty sort of 60's Brit pop melodies, "you don't need to tell me where you were on 9/11 unless you can tell me what floor". The song has a sullen chamber pop sound overall which fits the commentary here. The song is a sign of our times, our online presence or our need to even flip through dozens of Instagram pages daily might be just fun but maybe the opiate of the masses, a phrase town out of history but certainly may apply here. In any event, I like pop music that make you think, that asks questions.
"Look at me rambling like I'm on a damn crusade
When really I'm a fun loving hypocrite
Today you don't want to think about me
Today you just want to breathe
And Jesus, I can take a hint
I think I'll give it
Give it a rest"
I look forward to delving into more of "With You".

Born and raised in Utica New York. Adam now lives in Orlando Florida where he just released his debut album, With You. A blend of Indie/Psychedelic/Alternative Pop, this release defies genres. Drawing inspiration from late Beach boys, and The Beatles. Along with modern influences such as, MGMT, and Father John Misty. With you is a loose concept album exploding with yearning for connection to something real.
