"and I believe in you, let me sleep goddamn it"
Small Song by Chicago based Paddlefish (surprise) does not sound small, it, in fact, sounds big, vast and embracing. So the name is ironic like that guy you know that goes by the nickname Tiny but is 6 foot 3 and massive. I love the upfront vox and the sheer density of it all. It feels very 90's college rock radio, DIY, bedroom pop stuff even if it is not. The bass thumps with upfront drums while jumpy guitar riffs are plentiful. For some reason, in some small way, early Strokes popped in my head and then the bottom drops out into dreamy floaty synths. The change is dramatic (and not Strokes like), beautifully dreamy and elevates the song. The breath makes the resulting musical break all the more post punk potent and, smartly, the dreamy melodies play behind the super dirty lead guitar. Cool.
Paddlefish is the musical project of singer-songwriter Owen Misterovich, with the talents of Zaida Wade, Bayden Fraley, and Missy Farrel.

Eventually teenagers leave the basement and head off to college. Paddlefish’s second full length album finds them discovering the built-in blinders of youthful sincerity and the pain of removing those blinders. “Spill Me!”, a ten song cassette/CD released by High Dive Records on August 17, 2018, is carefree energy fused with the discordant life choices subverting your sleep.
Owen Misterovich (18 years old) guitar, vocals, and songwriter; Zaida Wade (20) guitar; Blake Nieman (18) bass; and Anthony Clark (17) drums; have known each other since elementary school. They formed Paddlefish in late 2014 in Owen’s basement. But now Owen will be heading to Columbia College Chicago and regrouping the band there. The other members are heading off to colleges in St. Louis, Nashville, and Springfield, MO.
The band has released a 5 song cassette, “Lidsville”, in August 2015 and a 9 song LP, “Refrigerator”, in July 2017. They also appear on the compilation vinyl 12 x 12 by Wee Rock Records.
