"my love don't cry, don't cry my love"
The Pond by UK's Sunkin is a sweeping indie rocker steeped in longing, in undoubtedly long gazes at phone screens and hushed late night calls. It starts with keys that sound almost Church like, a gospel of sorts, with washes of percussion and strings sounds and when Joe Ferdinand's low sandpaper growl vocal aesthetic begins it surprises and pulls you into the song's narrative, into the emotion, into the words. Before you know it, that gospel has turned into big sweeping rock crescendos built on big guitars, punchy bass and drums and synth orchestrations. Ferdinand can croon darkly but can wail too during those big waves of sound. The musical break absolutely kills, might induce goose bumps (as it did me). The song is personal, a reflection of a past love of Ferdinand's who had moved to New York while he stayed in London. The Official Video depicts the push and pull, the end. Ferdinand offers:
"no matter how much you try, sometimes it's not meant to be, or it was only meant to be for that certain period of time. Love comes and goes, celebrate and nurture it while its here."
In the end, The Pond (especially listening in a quiet place and turned up) wraps around you, conjures up thoughts about choices and struggles in your own life.
Sunkin is Joe Ferdinand (vox, guitar), Hector Cottam (keys, drums, backing vox) and Declan Brown (bass).
