"your agony is an extravagance"
Arswain is the conceptual electronic project from composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Freddy Avis and his latest evocative offering Pleasure has such an enticing sonic narrative that is seeps into your brain easily until you are lost in the sounds. From the onset, and please listen with closed cup headphones, the experience is utterly cinematic. The production is so nuanced with a wealth of synths bringing a multitude of melody lines and while the arpeggio glues it all together, some of those melodies feel linear, existing only once. Arswain's vocal melodies are drenched in an 80's Depeche Mode-esque stoic passion. I know that seems like an oxymoronic equation but it is not. The emotional temperament is a dark simmer as if Arswain is singing within a frozen inhalation. This is not to say that you do not feel the emotions, "fucking up everything with my life" but the sounds, like danger seem to hush his cries. Extremely cool track.
Experience the song through the Official Video featuring and choreographed by German dancer Carly Lave is a different experience all together but the sensual allure is a metaphor for something else.
"At the time I wrote ‘Pleasure’ I was fixated on this idea of climate change as an act of violence; how we, consumers in rich countries, are unwittingly killing people overseas by engaging in petty pleasures like driving our cars and buying meaningless products. So ‘Pleasure’ is about that daily guilt that accompanies modern life, the costs of which are far greater and broader than we perceive on a daily basis. Video director Will Hamilton (aka IndexThumb) understood this vision completely when I came to him for a video, and Carly brought it to life by portraying a club-goer who, like many of us, is aimlessly seeking a kind of fleeting pleasure in nightlife, completely unaware of the consequences.” - Arswain
