"lick your lips until they're raw"
The dark and dreamy Milkdrinker by Minneapolis based Dad Bod and from their 2020 "Precursor" EP walks an emotional tight rope. The song exists on the ostensibly stripped down collections of songs that the band decided to release while in Quarantine as a precursor to a full length planned for a summer release.
Milkdrinker, like many of the other tracks leaves the drums and big electric guitar sounds at the door and is framed in spartan acoustic tones and singer songwriter Callie Marino's exquisitely moving, wistful vox. The song lyrically is couched in obtuse poetry that could mean a lot of things but you feel pain and loss of a relationship on the way out. Marino sings in a forlorn tone as if the ending was inevitable or that all human attachments are fragile. There are flourishes of what feels like an orchestrated wash of droning guitar sounds, bass and booming bass but it is all secondary to Marino's cries.
