"You made a bubble that I couldn’t peel off"
The Perfect Sign Language Pistol is the musical project of Angel Krotnev and Jerker Österlind (based out of Sweden) and they just released their debut self titled EP (2020). Not to long ago wrote about the EP's opening track, Glow, "a mysterious and sultry cajole", you can read that review here.
Their second offering and second track of the EP, Habits, like Glow utilizes the quiet, space between notes and nuances to seep into the pleasure centers of your brain. When I say pleasure centers, this is not to say that this is a cheery song, it is not. With it's almost church like organs and down turned tones it feels sad and inward. When the drum beats and upswings start, what sounds like a hopeful ascension, "cuz all of my habits were for you", is ultimately a dark reflection, "ever since I asked you to leave / the special place ain’t so special to me / It’s all dried up / all dried up", of a relationship turned sour until dying.
In the end the track is moving, musically engaging and, for most of us, utterly relatable. A song to comfort while having a stiff drink, either longing for what could have been or celebrating a goodbye to a toxic situation.
The pair share:
"The challenge of performing as a duo is inspiring, and our years of experience from previous projects (Brainchild, Deathember, Fennek Film OSTs, art museeum installations, The Semmelweis Reflex, and years of studio work and other collabs) merge together into something that is interesting, raw and somewhat frightening to be part of."
