"L’esquisse d’une journée Un matin, clair et frais"
Aude Langlois is a French musician and composer based in Berlin and her first single, Promesses, is a languid dream best experienced through the vision of director Carlos Vin Lopes and in cinemascope as shot on LOMO vintage style anamorphic lenses by cinematographer Andrés Lizana Prado within the picturesque landscape of Saxony, Germany. The wide aspect ratio gives the already hallucinogenic dreaminess an even more surreal tone as the lush surroundings (of friends eating at a well adorned white clothed table) and their smiles that seem to hold secrets bursting to reveal themselves feels oddly happy and beautiful at the same time.
"I wrote the core of this song 10 years ago in Paris," says Aude on her debut. "The milky light was shining in this beautiful white apartment on the Rue de Bretagne. It felt calm and full of possibilities yet a melancholily of something that didn’t exist tainted this beautiful moment. I felt young and old at the same time. It is a song written on and for the guitar, its resonances and specific harmonies taking place in the body of the wood.
Once in Berlin, I tried to record this song many times in very different settings. Vulnerability was perceived as weakness, melancholy as sadness and versatility as uncertainty. 'Promesses' is a song about unspoken feelings, about having an open heart to possibilities, about light being untangled with shadows. I didn’t know by then, but I had to let it sit for a while until it could be born into the world.
When I met Carlos Vin, I didn’t know he would be the storyteller that this song needed. Based on a self recorded demo, he gave another dimension to “Promesses” by writing a storyboard people could relate to. Gathering a pool of creatives around the song - starting by the art director Valerio - we created a multifaceted world. Our trip to the countryside near Leipzig to shoot this video became the starting point of the creative path we intend to lead together."
As rain overtakes the festivities and you see Langlois running to escape the rain while the stoic party goers are looking outside French doors, she looks back but there is no reveal as to what they are all looking at. Like all beautiful things we are left with a sense of mystery. Promesses' simple production and Aude Langlois ethereal melodies are truly beautiful and I like songs in languages I don't speak as they add even more mystery. I do admit to reading the English subtitles on the Official Video. Another advantage, I suppose, besides the sheer hallucination of it all. Oh, and I suggest you view on a big screen and view on You Tube for the full effect.

Aude Langlois is a French musician and composer based in Berlin. Having gained experiences in sound art, experimental band set up and theatre sound design, Aude now presents her musical poetic project, where her voice is the main carrier of her musicality and expression. Her daily life oscillates between English and German but her most intimate language of expression remains French where she can express feelings through the meaning and the sound of the words of her mother tongue.
Aude’s first single 'Promesses' is a poem combining melancholic and dreamy images. The song is brought to life by director Carlos Vin Lopes, cinematographer Andréa Lizana Prado, and a handful of close friends in the official video that was captured within the picturesque surroundings of Saxony, Germany.
Aude's debut EP Promesses will be self-released on August 28th, 2020.
