"doesn't anybody out there enjoy a party"
On the percolating psych soaked electro pop Green, Perth, Australia's singer-songwriter Grace Sanders navigates deep grooves and distorted guitar jags that funk it up before trippy surprises provide twists and turns that elevate the song above your normal dance-able pop tune. I love the overall gritty tone as if everything (but Sanders amazingly versatile indie soul pop vocal aesthetic) has a fuzzy wash over it. It is Sanders' fluid bounce and divergent melodic steps (into emotional places) rising and falling that carries weight and, no wonder, Green, though painted with pop affections, is informed by some difficult times and underlying themes exploring "loneliness, dejection and procrastination" as Sanders shares:
"I wrote Green after I had lost 3 jobs, my car broke down, my Dad had a heart attack, a friend had passed away only the month prior - I was just generally depressed, isolated and bored. I wanted it to capture the feeling of being alone in a room full of people, swamped by all the shit that's going wrong in your life and yet unable to share those feelings with anyone around you."
As singer-songwriter, Sanders enlisted the help of producer Ezekiel "Zeke" Padmanabham on Green. Amazing results.
