"I'll shelter the light"
Portland gaucho rock singer-songwriter Johnny Franco has just released his double single and Stay Real has got such a classic rock attack and sensibility. It is this sort of 70's rock / pop flavor that I have heard in his past work, this adept riding style that made me think of John Lennon's solo work, work that, in a true sense was a fresh take on 50's and 60's rock with a pop forward approach. I hear that with Franco. On Stay Real, with the falling guitar lines and easy drum beat, it brings that almost finger snap cadence of doo wop. The full backing vox and the evocative chorus melodies has bits of Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers too.
Shelter The Light mines iconic rock sounds too with such chill psych rock affections and float beautifully in the ether. Compositionally there is a theatrical chamber pop point of view and the surreal pop guidelines of a Harry Nilsson and George Tipton.
Absolutely beautiful.
[Because of the pandemic, Johnny has not been able to travel back to Brazil. So although they have a universal message, "Stay Real" and "Shelter The Light" have a deeper meaning for him personally.]
