"and I try and try and I am afraid to lose"
Stupid Nerves by indie pop /rock singer-songwriter Andrea Franz begins with swelling sounds and deep piano downbeats that give way to artful croon embraced with wide eyed dramatics. It is beautiful stuff, earthbound but heavenly like a pop gospel in a city street as opposed to a church. When the bass sway and sort of 60's shuffle beat comes in, the vox become more playful and in my mind's eye and maybe yours too, there are visions of brightly colors singers and girls with vinyl boots and an audience clapping along. Somewhere sitting amid the teens there is a vision of Dick Clark or a Dick Clark-esque persona with one of those long skinny microphones. The sound is modern doo wop indie rock with an elegant pop forward bounce but containing emotional edges too.
Franz says Stupid Nerves "talks about the anxiety you feel when you try to express yourself in front of others. All the practicing you did in your room helped... but, as soon as you as you are in from of others, it becomes very uncomfortable and nerve wracking."
That being said you wouldn't sense that anxiety from the intensely happy vibe, lush bass line and seriously thumping beat. The musical breaks are as Mersey Beat as the are Americana rock with touches of early, early Springsteen-esque pop funk tones. It is all lovely stuff and purely early rock and fills my need to escape during these crazy ass times. I just wish it didn't end so fast.
