The curiously named "redBrocket" by thomTide, the musical project by New Jersey born, San Diego based Lee Rutledge, feels so utterly brief, made even more fleeting because it is so captivating. From the onset the song full of layered textures falls into a sort of spacey tropicalia, a pastiche of sounds and images that starts vibing and bouncing in glorious ways. It tells a story or feels like it does and then ends abruptly feeling like a come on, like an interlude to more stories. Rutledge who cut his teeth in production working with other artists under the moniker Kakuyon, has a way with atmosphere and telling stories in his compositions with (to me) words that make up part of the sound regardless of the words being understood. That is to say that someone in Roseau or Hai Phong who does not speak the language of "redBrocket" would still, somehow understand it.
There is another half to the project that is tomTide as press notes indicate:
[thomTide, the project of New Jersey-born Lee Rutledge, is a project that embodies balance and restoration. "Tide" represents ebb and flow, balance, a cycle; it implies a relationship. One between the water on Earth and the sun and moon in the ether. Thomas is a name meaning twin, and also happens to be the middle name shared by both Dominique Mills, the visual artist behind the project, and Lee who met back in 2014 under a shared curiosity of the world and limitless imagination.]
[thomTide challenges the typical structure of an album release, which is commonly packaged into a collection of songs and consumed at once. The songs that comprise thomTide’s debut project will be released bi-weekly over the course of a year. If you take the analogy that the traditional LP or EP is like a "movie," thomTide will be releasing a "TV show" of music, where a single is an episode and the seasons coincide with the seasons of the year: Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer.]

San Diego creative thomTide brings us a sonically intricate, genre-bending, and norm-defying project. The first release is an otherworldly track that has a fresh take on indie, electronic music. With an original lens and perspective-shifting sound, ThomTide's break-out single "redBrocket" marks a moment in time for this innovative artist.
Lee comes from a lineage of teachers which has shaped his values, his passion for learning both inside and outside the classroom, and his creativity in more ways he can count. Lee's first stint in music began with composing classical style pieces and he later applied that theory and storytelling to more popular styles. He established his roots in production, working with other artists under the moniker Kakuyon, which garnered attention from tastemakers like Pigeons and Planes and What The Sound. Lee soon found he was craving more intimacy and personal involvement in the music, and thus thomTide was born - an exciting and freeing new project. thomTide started simply as a commitment to bringing life to Lee's favorite songs that no one wanted. It has matured into something far more personal, as a way to process the past and present. "So much happens and changes in the world all the time, and I wanted a project that was just as free and fluid. thomTide is inspired by everything that has happened to me and the world recently and will be inspired by everything that happens as the year progresses."
Shimmery vocals glide across a synth-backed soundscape and a wave of eerie energy simmers in its reticent glory. The one-of-a-kind "redBrocket" feels supernatural in sound with its seamless blend of percussion, glitchy synths, and soaring vocals. There's an old-timey feel to the structure of the chorus that almost leaves you feeling homesick and yearning for resolve. thomTide packs a punch in this less than 2-minute track and will have you reaching for the replay button more than once.
