"Pawning your mom’s rings"
"Things Changed" by The Sunshine State, the brand new project of skillful songwriter Skyler Stonestreet who has penned songs for the likes of Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, The Chainsmokers and more, has a pop vox populi sound with guitar chords that hearken back to the 80's, a skateboard crash amalgam of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" 2010, Fountains of Wayne's "Stacy's Mom" 2003, Kelly Clarkson's "Since You Been Gone" 2004 and Sixpence None The Richer's "Kiss Me" 1998. Yeah I know that sounds strange and this is not to say that Stonestreet has written a song that sounds like anyone one of those but "Things Changed" swings wide like a good pop song should and the lyrics are (gratefully) vague and poetic carving out the bones for a story we want to know more about that exists in between the lines. In the end, it feels forever youthful and subversive in a safe way, a pop distillation that feels comfortable and catchy like ones played as the credit rolls on a fantastic rom com.

The Sunshine State, the new project of distinguished songwriter Skyler Stonestreet, is ready to share her next single "Things Changed," due out next week. Stonestreet, known for penning top hits for artists like Ariana Grande & Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, The Chainsmokers, Marshmello, Hailee Steinfeld, and many more, brings her dextrous songwriting and revered indie sound to life in this new project.
"Things Changed" (written by Skyler, Hayley Gene Penner (Lennon Stella, Charlotte Lawrence), and Nick Monson (Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez)) follows the release of debut single "Cliff Drive" which catapulted The Sunshine State as an artist to watch in the new year. Stonestreet previously released a slew of singles under her own name, garnering praise far and wide from the likes of PAPER, Billboard, Pop Dust, Ones To Watch and more.
In new single "Things Changed," driving guitars meet shades of twinkling alt-pop and indie rock while radiant vocals take center stage. The Sunshine State delivers a message about naïveté and a blissfully reckless youth. As she reconciles with her past and how things could've gone, she counts her lucky stars for the way they turned out.
Skyler shares, "'Things Changed' is about where I was in my life and where I could have gone. It’s about who I was with and where they ended up.It’s about the different roads you can take and the ones you choose to leave behind."

"With another banger in the bank, it's only a matter of time before Stonestreet starts cashing in." - Billboard
"The single possesses Stonestreet's innate hit making prowess" - PAPER
"the perfect soundtrack" - Ones to Watch
"all around badass" - Pop Dust
Born in Las Vegas, Skyler moved to Los Angeles shortly after graduating high school to pursue a career in music. However, a breast cancer diagnosis put things on hold for a little while. After successfully battling the disease, Skyler's experience, determination, and gusto became a clear catalyst for her burgeoning career. "[Breast cancer] doesn't define me," Stonestreet shared with Ones To Watch. "But now I want to help other people who are going through it. And I want girls to know that they should feel okay in their own skin."
The Sunshine State feels like a true representation of Skyler as an artist in her own right. The LA-native creates an altered state full of dreamy landscapes and distorted guitars by diving into her roots of live instruments and ambient vocals. "It’s taken me a long time to figure out exactly what I want to do with my music and I feel like this crazy 2020 has actually helped unlock that (but more it’s because of the help of two of my favorite humans. I feel like I have honestly lived a lot of different lives, some that I have never really looked at, or acknowledged. I think I got too good at pretending they didn’t exist, so I felt like writing about them all."
