"sometimes I want you but I don't want much..."
Sometimes to a maladjusted jaded person like myself your standard verse / chorus / verse / bridge / chorus feels rather pedestrian but sometimes it feels perfect. Take the title track, "Old Pursuit" from London based Paul Cook & The Chronicles' new 6 track EP and you will see what I mean. Truth be told they do not follow the script exactly by slipping in a sort of pre-verse interlude before the second verse and when that happens it is an amazing surprise, a beautiful breath / pause highlighting wonderful vocal harmonies (sans words really) and a decidedly melodic bass line. This early surprise is something that most artists or producers would make happen a lot later in the song but it is so appreciated. Cook's melodies from the onset are hooky, more complex during the verses and then shifts into a very 60's Brit pop tone during the chorus. The song shuns modern indie rock tropes and goes for classic pop rock sounds and the pristine tones infused with charming lyrics feels unabashedly different in today's landscape. I flashed on artists like Crowded House (and even Spit Enz) as well as Squeeze, Elvis Costello and tangentially the nucleic acid of the Beatles who, of course, informed most of us.
'Old Pursuit - EP" was produced by Paul Cook & Julian Simmons (A Girl Called Eddy, Pregoblin, Midlake) and performed by Cook with drums by Martyn Kaine (Nitin Sawhney) and Phil Wilkinson (Jake Bugg, Brett Anderson, King Creosote).
