"cause you used to dream in black and white
Berlin based Black Pope's raucous and caustic "Demon Stomp" from the upcoming EP “Music for Girls Vol. I” (due to drop this summer 2021) is nearly 7 minutes of potent blistering rock and roll. I say rock and roll and eschew other descriptors like post punk or rockabilly (even though there are dark elements of both) because it is audaciously so very rock and roll down to the sort of 50's Jerry Lee Lewis bones. I mean peel off the exquisitely bottom heavy post punk pummel of big jagged beach goth guitars and distorted bass (love the bass sound) anchored by fierce drumming and you feel that 50's piano hammering. Black Pope's aesthetic is to get more and more expansive and dramatic and then shut it off to reveal this splendidly spartan skeleton. The track feels at once like a ghost story with bits of punchy baroque pop and gothic rock peering inside. Vocally, Pope is both artful and sketchy like a carnival freak show provocateur. If rock and roll is the work of the devil, Black Pope is his smiling helper, all dolled up and gorgeous.
Pope explains more about the rattling bones of this track:
“I guess the song is about not belonging anywhere, and the emotional chaos that can cause,” the songwriter explains. “We all find a balance of how much we’re willing to go along with other people's expectations, but without a strong sense of self, it can be easy to get lost. All that, plus you’re 16 and possessed by the Devil.”
"Demon Stomp" is a rabble rousing rock and roll meets dark punk / horror pop romp that never gets old, it asks for your soul and you gladly give it.

Black Pope’s music has been described by Mojo Magazine as a neo-rock’n’roll soundtrack of surf guitar rumble. Rewriting adolescent love stories as horror movies, Black Pope borrows from classic and contemporary rock’n’roll to take you back to an era that never existed. Currently establishing his cult in Berlin, people are drawn to his high energy performances, hip-shaking charisma and an insatiable appetite for all things dark and mysterious. For many, this is the end of civilization as we know it. For Black Pope, it’s just another full moon.
