North Queensland's singer-songwriter Dan Baker has an immaculately torn, even shredded vocal aesthetic. The coarseness only imbues his harsh truths and with more bloody coats of pain. His latest "Freeze Dried Coffee" feels particularly dramatic and moving and is from his upcoming EP "From Corners Quiet" dropping on July 30th (2021). The overall sonic sense of "Freeze Dried Coffee" feels rustic like a country waltz bathed in garden rock tones, tiny bits of honky tone affections, fiddles and electric guitar lines that work in tandem all anchored by Baker's incredibly large voice. His wonderfully evocative vocal melody alone feels incredibly torn, sad and cinematic. Pile on his dark poetry and you have a formidable amount of emotional weight.
He shares:
"Having never been capable of any notable amount of grace or acceptance in the face of loss, I’ve managed to refine a formidable pallet for bitterness and longing. Such experience though has recently allowed for a more jovial brand of reflection upon my failures to resolve difficult situations. ‘Freeze Dried Coffee’ considers these situations and challenges with attachment while confessing to my shortcomings through smiling, coffee-stained teeth."
"Freeze Dried Coffee" stands as a gritty sort of testimonial song, beautifully rendered and beautifully pained. I am looking forward to hearing and feeling the full range of Dan Baker's emotions.
