"Not for nothing / Men and tales / Gloom and silence / And sleeping pills..."
"Girl Of Southern Irony" by If By Whiskey, the project of Niceville born (Florida) and Los Angeles based singer-songwriter, Aaron Overton and friends is a dreamy sonic diorama crafted seemingly in a simple way but the deeper you listen, the more subtleties float to the surface. There is, in fact, so much going on that it feels orchestral as Overton paints mixing watercolors of sound. His vocal aesthetic is up close and personal, lyrics obtusely poetic, addressed with bits of sadness and veiled hope but in a resolute way. He says of the track: "(it) explores how fleeting and ephemeral so much of life is through the story of a relationship" and movingly builds the musical narrative on acoustic guitar and a circular structure. The sort of post folk rock elements simmer in so wonderfully. There are many surprises to be had. The only chorus is the song's beautiful coda and as it remains in your heart and head after it ends you replay the abstract words trying to decipher their meanings. Lovely stuff here.
